FOR THE FUTURE 2023
A part of the Shifting Ecologies: Contemporary Artists and the Environment exhibition at the Frances M. Maguire Art Museum at St. Joseph's University and the Barnes Arboretum
Frances M. Maguire Art Museum
50 Lapsley Ln, Merion Station, PA 19066
May 6 – Jun 25, 2023
For the Future 2023 assembles vocabulary that focuses on creating climate solutions. Drawn from language used by local and national organizations seeking to restore a mutually nurturing relationship between humans and Earth, the words encourage a reworking of the philosophical framework we inherit from our industrialist ancestors. The surfaces of thirteen cyanotype banners installed both inside the museum and outside throughout the arboretum were created by an intricate layering of letter cutouts and the shadows of organic materials such as yard trimmings and vegetable kitchen scraps. The messaging takes the form of short mantras meant to guide a practice that cultivates an intimate connection to sustainable systems.
